Artist's Statement
" I live on Vashon Island in Washington's Puget Sound. You will find Vashon locales in my paintings: Fisher pond, SBC coffee, a friend's lily pond, the local roads and beaches and the water that surrounds us. My subject matter is varied: landscapes, still lifes, portraits. I am interested in dramatic lighting--I look for the sunlit passages through the woods, the light filtering through fog, late afternoon sunshine turning the Madrona orange and red. I paint in response to something I see; I like to paint the familiar view that has been transformed by unusual light, and often wind up painting directly into the sun because of the drama of a backlit view. Even overcast days in Puget Sound can be rewarding if one is patient--often the sun will break out in late afternoon and turn a mundane scene into something special. I find painting to be very difficult and immensely rewarding."
